Buying the Right Paintbrush

How to buy the right paintbrush.Like any other tool, specific paintbrushes are assembled for a specific use. This means that you cannot just walk into a hardware store, buy any paintbrush, and use the same brush to paint your house’s concrete exteriors and wood interiors, including its moldings and tight corners.

Bristles of paintbrushes are made of different materials. They can come from natural fibers, such as hog or ox hair, or synthetic fibers which could be nylon or a combination of nylon and polyester. Choose brushes with natural fibers when working with oil-based paints as well as varnishes and stains. They can hold these types of coats better than synthetics. Due to the stiffness of synthetic fibers and because they are better able to maintain their shape and resiliency, in contrast, they work better with latex and water-based paints.

Some brushes have their bristles flat while others are angled. The former are used for cutting in, or painting wide surfaces away from corners, edges, and moldings. Use brushes with different widths to make your painting job quicker. Angled brushes, on the other hand, are used for those areas that are difficult to reach with flat brushes. Typically, these brushes are 1 to 3½ inches wide.

Brush handles can either be made of wood or plastic. Plenty of professional painters recommend wood citing its durability and weight. New types of plastics, however, can hold their own when compared to wood. Ultimately, your choice may have to depend on how the brush feels in your hands. It has to be comfortable providing a relaxed feel to avoid cramped fingers.

And do not forget the ferrule, the metal fitting connecting the bristles to the handle. Your best option is stainless steel, as it is easier to clean and, since it resists rust, can last for years if properly cared for.

When buying a paintbrush, do not hesitate to ask your supplier for his recommendations. Explain to him what type of surface you plan to paint and whether it is an exterior or interior project.
